Create a variable weight item from the checkout
Hello, everyone! Today, I'll show you how to create a variable weight item from your cash register.
What is a variable weight item?
A variable weight item is a product sold by the kilo, litre, gram, etc., rather than by the unit. For example, if I sell paprika by the kilo, I must first indicate the quantity (such as 0.5 kg) before it appears on the receipt.
Steps to configure a variable weight item
✅ 1. Access article creation
Go to Settings → Articles and click on Add article.
💡 Tip: You can also create the article directly from the matrix by clicking on the dedicated button.
✅ 2. Fill in the basic information
- Name → Paprika
- Hierarchy → Select the family, for example Spices by weight
- Price → For example, £15/kg
- VAT → 6% for spices sold at retail
✅ 3. Enable the variable weight option
- Check “Variable quantity”
- Select the unit of measurement (e.g. kilo)
- Define the number of decimal places (usually 3, to allow values such as 0.333 kg)
✅ 4. Save the article
Click Save to save your settings.
✅ 5. Create a button in the matrix
Find the item (Paprika) and create a button to make it available for sale. Once configured, you will be able to enter specific quantities (e.g. 0.531 kg) and the checkout will automatically calculate the total amount.
Final result
Your item is ready to be sold by weight, with the correct calculation applied directly to the receipt.
