Ten years after the introduction of the black box linked to white cash register systems, the 2.0 era is here. A new model imposed by the Belgian government for all hospitality establishments.

Who is affected by Black Box 2.0?

The obligation to use the black box 2.0 has been extended to the entire hospitality sector. Initially, it only applied to restaurants where meals are consumed on site and caterers. Now, all forms of hospitality activities are affected, although the tolerance threshold of €25,000 in turnover remains in place.

In practical terms, this means that all restaurants with an annual turnover of €25,000 or more will have to install the system, even if they previously benefited from a tolerance.

When will you need to equip yourself with a box and an SCE 2.0?

  • 1 July 2025 – All new establishments
  • 1 July 2026 – Institutions with a certified cash register (SCE) between 2014 and 2017
  • 1 July 2027 – Institutions with a certified cash register (SCE) between 2018 and 2021
  • 1 July 2028 – Absolutely all establishments!

Tick, tock, tick, tock... You think you have time, but you know as well as we do that time flies, so don't put it off for too long. The saying ‘there's no point in rushing, you have to start on time’ certainly applies in this case! If you would like more information about making the change, please contact us here !

What does this change? How does Black Box 2.0 work?

The black box remains the small device connected to the certified cash register (SCE) that records every transaction made by the establishment. The new feature is that tax authorities will be able to view operational data at any time, without necessarily having to visit the establishment.
